This chapter introduces three key melodic transformation procedures:

1. Elimination - Progressive reduction of thematic material through successive removal of notes, concentrating material toward essential elements

2. Interversion of Notes - Reordering pitches within a melodic fragment while maintaining pitch-class content, creating variants through different sequences

3. Change of Register - Dramatic octave displacement moving low notes to extreme treble and high notes to extreme low register
